Yes, this is an annoying problem. For me the only working solution is to use Magnify with a factor of 200%.
But this problem exists with many applications not only Vmware Workstation.
Guest scaling is no option for me, as I use these machines from other devices, too and on a FHD display the big fonts are unusable.
If you are just running a console you could change the font size in the console, although that works only on a graphical console.
But for a Linux guest i would ssh into the guest or use an X-session from Windows with something like Xming. The native Linux console I only use for starting the Linux guest even on low resolution displays.
Sorry but no ideal solution seems to exist for this scenario.
